  • Merry Christmas & 100 hours!

Why, yes!  Tony is late in getting our Christmas cards out.  Not only that but while we are fairly good at getting electronic communications out we don’t even have half your addresses.

Please fill out this “self addressed envelope if you would like to receive a Christmas card from us.

I have been taking folks on tours of downtown Dallas to help build hours!  Last Sunday the Archer family all went out and finished up the last 1+ hour that I needed to complete my first 100 hours!

So 100 hours down, 300 to go.  Next on my training agenda is my instrument certification.

I look forward to taking as many of you as want to go on a night tour of downtown Dallas!

  • Long Cross-Country Completed

FINALLY!  After much…much delay I was able to go on my long cross-country solo.  240 nautical miles of cross-country goodness with landings at three separate airports.

From engine on to engine off it took me 2.9 hours.  I didn’t want to waste time and money taxiing to the terminal, getting out, re-checking the plane, etc so I just taxied back to the end of the runway, got my papers in order for the next flight and took off again.

Today I have another flight, a local solo, to practice take offs and landings

    1. Solo - Long (150mi) Cross-country - Done
    2. Solo Flight - Done
    3. Instructor Evaluation – Wed 25th
    4. Solo - FAA Practical Prep – Thu 26th
    5. Final Check-airman – Fri 27th
    6. FAA Practical TestWed 28th

I took a lot of video on the long solo and will be chopping it up and editing it together so you can see some of what it was like.

  • Long Solo Completed!

Another of the milestones I had been waiting to complete was finally completed on the 20th!  The flight was exciting and showed me that, yes, I am capable of safely flying an airplane alone.  At the same time it gave me more of an indication of the areas I need to improve myself in.

You know that moment that comes when you are learning something new and you realize that there are so many areas you could improve further?  That was the case with this flight.

Some have asked how it felt and I would say that the first solo was more exhilarating than this one.  I think mainly because this flight had been holding back my training and it took so long to be able to do.

Thank you all so much for your prayers and encouragement. I do so love to hear from you all.  One of my aunts simply wrote “Woohoo!” in an email to me and you know what, that is just as encouraging as a single-spaced four page essay which I know so many of you were thinking about writing!

  • The Eternal Delay

Well,  I suppose I should be used to it by now.  Today, an amazingly beautiful, cloudless, light wind day was just too good to be true.  The winds were ONE knot over the limit for the school’s solos.  ONE knot!  Therefore, no solo today.

I instead completed two other lessons.  So next up is still my solo and navigation & emergency instrument descents and climbs.

That in turn would put me at lesson 16 which begins my cross country flights. and I will be 63% done with my private pilot training.

  • Delays, Delays and More Delays…

Well, I was supposed to fly my first solo maneuvers several weeks ago.  However, the ceilings got low, or the winds picked up, or both and the weather was outside school policy guidelines for student pilots.  Until Christmas Eve and Christmas.  Then we had two gorgeous days…followed by high winds.

Then Sheea had an operation and I was more concerned with taking care of her and the kids.  Then the school closed for New Years.  But Friday the second looked great!  So, I scheduled it.  Finally I was to make this flight I have been so looking forward to.

Then, Thursday night, within about an hours time I came down with a nasty cold.  I disappointedly cancelled my flight (it would be unsafe to fly while thinking slowly due to illness).  I had to cancel the regularly scheduled Saturday flight as well…sigh.

Today, however, I woke up feeling much better and am looking forward to my Tuesday flight.  Hopefully later in the week we will have a calm day and I will finally be able

to get my solo out of the way.

Please continue to pray for the health and well-being of our family and for God's provision for the flight training.

    Miscellaneous information:

Below is a map of my solo maneuvers.  The lowest pushpin is Addison airport.  The top-left is the practice area (north of 380) and McKinney Airport is on the far right.

    Map picture

I will take off from Addison, fly north to practice maneuvers, fly to McKinney to practice landings and then back to Addison.
